It's easy to develop a deeper appreciation of the sensory experience called 'WINE'.
All it takes is a little Consideration and Practice.

Once you give tasting wine a little attention, you'll quickly learn to identify
the different elements that make up wine. And also how those elements vary
in different wine styles and regions.

There are some pretty standard tips on how to go about serious wine tasting.
The American Wine Society suggests a procedure:
1. See
2. Swirl
3. Sniff
4. Sip
5. Savor

Actually, they suggest 6. Spit, too.
We don't - but admittedly, your taste-buds will get sloshed after a couple of samples.

Since our sense of smell and taste are so intimately tied together, slurping instead of sipping can generate a more intense sensation.  If slurping isn't your style, try chewing your wine in order to get it well distributed over your taste buds and palette.  It may seem silly - but it works!

Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out what to CALL different aromas and flavors.
Professor Noble at the University of California at Davis (ACN's Sensory Science Homepage)  has developed an excellent aid to categorize flavors and aromas - and a system to help you learn to pick them out.

It is based on the 'AromaWheel'

The most general flavor groups are named in the center of the wheel.  The further toward the edge, the more specific the flavor. For instance: Fruit -> Berry -> Raspberry. The AromaWheel is a handy guide to help name those elusive flavors on the tip of your tongue.

The AWS also has a handy evaluation form used in many competitions.
It helps you separate and describe different factors:

Appearance: Color, Reflectance, Clarity, Body, Bubbles
Aroma/Bouquet:
Description, Bouquet notes, Harmony
Taste/Texture:
Description, Tartness, Sweetness, Bitterness, Astringency, Body, Balance
Aftertaste:
Length, Astringency, Balance, Body
Overall Impression:
How typical of type/region, Quality, Complexity and Harmony

Try our Tasting Form.
It contains built-in explanations of all the factors, and handy terms for description
(Well... Someday.)
