Apples and Pears!
(And Quince, Medlars, Rosehips, and Saskatoons, too!)

Apples have a long history of cultivation.  Several THOUSAND varieties have been bred over the years.  Apple breeding has been a pastime of small gardeners for centuries - perhaps reaching its peak in 19th century Britain. Alcoholic cider was a major industry of England and the American Colonies.

Only a couple of dozen varieties are now grown commercially, but many historically popular apples are still grown by small orchards and backyard gardeners.

Along with apples, pears have played a role in beverage production through the ages, especially in northern France.

Quince is a tough-fleshed fruit most commonly used as rootstock for pear grafting.

All three are found nearly globally.  The ancestral home of our eating apples seems to be the Caucasian Mountain area of Eurasia.
